Why is it the USS Enterprise?

USS stands for United States Ship, and seeing as the Starship Enterprise belongs to the Federation, The name "USS Enterprise" makes no sense. Also, considering Star Trek was a British show, it Would still be HMS if it were based of real life. Even in the new Star Trek movie, i wasn't changed. Shouldn't it be FSS for Federation Starship or UFSS, United Federation Starship?
