If everything weighs nothing in space, why do cruisers from sci-fi movies travel slower than fighters?

I heard somewhere that since there is no gravity in space, big things can technically weigh the same as small things. Wouldn't this mean that the massive engines on starship cruisers propel them heaps faster than the fighters with the smaller engines?
