When and why did Jefferson Airplane become Jefferson Starship and then just "Starship" afterward?

Jefferson Airplane pretty much became Jefferson Starship due the break up of the Airplane. Jefferson Starship was born during the recording of Airplane guitarist Paul Kantner's solo album Blows Against The Empire. The musicians assembled for the album were dubbed Jefferson Airplane by Kantner. Jefferson Starship became just Starship after Paul Kantner left the group. When Kantner left Jefferson Starship, the rest of the group wanted to continue under the Jefferson Starship name but Kantner sued saying he owned the rights to the Jefferson Airplane. Kantner won so the band had to reduce to just the Starship name.
